Marking the centenary of the end of First World War and acknowledging the enormity of the sacrifice made by the people of Littlehampton in the Great War, Littlehampton Town Council has funded a commemorative book. Entitled “When I Have Done My Bit”…Littlehampton and the Great War, the book contains 67 pages of images from the collections of the Littlehampton Museum.

The book takes you on pictorial journey of the Town, its people and Armed Forces, when the War broke out through to the aftermath. In it you will discover previously unseen images of our river and quays and the Town’s buildings.

The project was driven, and images selected and edited by volunteers David Twinn and Peter Walton and curated by Alexander Woodward. Help in verifying the pictures was from volunteer Jill Belchamber.

Speaking about the book, David Twinn and Peter Walton said: “We are delighted to present this collection of photographs which will give readers some feeling for Littlehampton throughout the terrible experience of the Great War. We hope it will interest you to know what the main streets of the Town looked like and how our predecessors dressed then. We also show you what public transport looked like then and how the River Arun played such a significant role.”

Councillor Ian Buckland, Chair of the Community Resources Committee added: “The people of Littlehampton, of all ages and from all backgrounds, gave their support in many ways to help in the War effort. “When I’ve Done My Bit” has been produced to celebrate the enormous contribution made by the people of Littlehampton.”

The book is available from the Littlehampton Museum shop and is priced at £3. All profits from the sale of the book will be donated to Veterans Charities
