Nearly 5,000 people descended on Littlehampton’s East Green on Saturday 15 August for a free night of cinema under the stars to watch the 1978 comedy musical film ‘Grease’. The twelfth instalment of the free event, supported by Cuff Miller, was organised by Littlehampton Town Council and was warmly welcomed by local residents and tourists alike.

Foodies indulged in a variety of sweet and savoury treats courtesy of Nic and Ben’s Entertainments, the Littlehampton District Lions Club and Banjo Road concessions – Bentleys Café, Board Café, Soul Kitchen and Bar and Jim's Ice Cream. As the sun set, the Mayor of Littlehampton, Councillor Maralyn May, officially opened the event, and thanked everyone for supporting and contributing to a fantastic evening.

The evening kicked off with the Vintage Duo performing hits from the 50s. The Rydell High Head Teacher performed songs from the film and expertly hosted Hand Jive and Fancy Dress competitions, attracting numerous participants. The winners of the Fancy Dress competition were a stunning Amelia, dressed as Frenchie, in the under 18 category; Sue, as a biker girl, in the over 18 category; and Leyla, Millie and Gracie, in their best pyjamas, in the group or family category. The winners of the Hand Jive competition were lovely Jemma and Jo. All received prizes generously donated by Harbour Park, Spokes Cycles, Creative Heart and Bah-Humbug Sweets.

Speaking after the event, Town Mayor Councillor Maralyn May, said: “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Tyndall Jones for raising over £500 and to everyone who generously contributed to my chosen charity, the Littlehampton Community Growers and Girlguiding. Your generosity means the world to these causes.”

A special thank you also goes to members of the public who stayed late to help tidy up the Green.

Chair of the Community Resources Committee, Councillor Freddie Tandy, added: “It was fantastic seeing families enjoy the free event. It has such a good atmosphere, and we are proud to provide the best outdoor cinema experience in the area. And the fun doesn’t stop here – there’s plenty more happening in the Town Council’s events calendar! Be sure to pick up an event guide from Manor House to stay in the loop.”

The Town Council’s next big community event is the Town Show and Family Fun Day on Saturday 12 September at Rosemead Park. More details of upcoming events can be found at www.visitlittlehampton.co.uk.
