Over 300 children turned out on Littlehampton Seafront to participate in the annual Sandcastle Competition on Thursday 6 August, organised by Littlehampton Town Council. 

The competitors, including tourists from outside of West Sussex, were given an hour to create their most imaginative sand sculpture for the chance to win some incredible prizes. This year, prizes were donated by event sponsors, Harbour Park, East Beach Café, Spokes Cycles and Bah-Humbug Sweets. 

This year’s event was also expanded to include information stalls on water safety, giving families the chance to pick up useful advice while enjoying the day. Free face painting was also available, adding even more fun for children taking part in the competition and visiting the seafront.

The winner of the under 5’s category, judged by Councillor Alan Butcher was an incredible “Nanny’s Turtle”. In the over 5’s category judged by Councillor Freddie Tandy and Town Clerk Laura Chrysostomou there were many amazing creations to choose from, but the brilliant “Inkey the Octopus” took first place! Finally, the 10+ category winner was a fantastic “Meechaccio Castle” piece judged by the Mayor of Littlehampton, Councillor Maralyn May.

Speaking about the annual event, Chair of the Community Resources Committee, Councillor Freddie Tandy, said: “It is always a pleasure seeing our lovely beach busy with people enjoying themselves but this event really is a highlight for me. Having been born in Littlehampton it brings back cherished memories of endless hours of fun. There were some incredible creations by all the competitors which made it an impossible task for our judges to choose their favourite! We had some wonderful designs including octopuses, castles, turtles, mermaids and crabs.”
