Pancake Olympians

Crowds flocked to the High Street on Saturday to watch Pirates and Pantomime Characters compete in the 10th annual Littlehampton Charity Pancake Olympics. 18 teams took part in three fun Olympic inspired disciplines to win money for their chosen charities. The bronze prize was sponsored by the Fish Factory. Pancakes were supplied by Sainsbury’s. The games were officially opened by Cllr Ian Buckland, Chair of the Community Resources Committee. Speaking at the end of the event, he said. ‘’The team spirit shown today by the Littlehampton Community has been outstanding, raising much needed funds for some great causes. I’d like to thank everyone for participating and showing your support and look forward to seeing you all again at future events.’’

In the spirit of the current PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games, the first challenge the teams faced was the unique pancake curling discipline. One team member was tasked with sliding a curling stone with a pancake on top onto the target whilst the other team mate wafted a frying pan, a crucial element of the curling technique. The winners were the Flipping Fantastic Four from Safe in Sussex who won both their heat and semi-final on their way to winning the final. Right behind them receiving silver medals were The Edwin James Festival Choir’s team, Daisy’s Pancakes and taking bronze was All Saints Church Wick. New Age Kurling Club provided the equipment for the discipline.

The team from Morrison’s in Wick were on hand to supply the crowd with doughnuts as half time treats.

The second discipline was the relay, where team members had to walk from one end of the arena to the other and flip their pancake into their teammate’s pan, the teammate then had to walk back to the start and flip the pancake over their shoulder and into a basketball hoop. The aptly named Morrison’s Flippers took the Gold, Spirit FM Silver and Aruncare Tossers took Bronze.

The last challenge was traditional pancake flipping, where one team member had to flip a pancake as many times as they could in 30 seconds. Bronze went to the Spirit FM team, Silver to All Saints Wick and Gold to Elmcroft Care Home.

The Mayor, Cllr Billy Blanchard-Cooper crowned Safe in Sussex the 2018 Pancake Olympic Champions, they received the coveted Gold Frying Pan and a cheque for £100 courtesy of Littlehampton Town Council. Receiving the Silver frying pan and £50 courtesy of Littlehampton Town Council were All Saints Wick. Coming in a respectable 3rd place and takin the Bronze frying pan were Spirit FM. They received a cheque for £25 courtesy of The Fish Factory.

Tyndall Jones was on hand with his collection tin raising £86.14 for the Mayor’s Charities, Littlehampton Heritage Railway Association and Friends of Mewsbrook Park.
